What's the point of a backup if it's stored on the same device that could fail? I'll demonstrate how to back up and restore Home Assistant with Google Drive, automatically uploading backups and enabling easy restoration.

How To Backup

  1. Install a backup add-on in Home Assistant.
  2. Open Home Assistant and navigate to Supervisor.
  3. Access the Add-on Store, click on the three dots in the upper right corner, and choose Repositories.
  4. Add the following URL: https://github.com/sabeechen/hassio-google-drive-backup
  5. Scroll down to find the new repository and select the "Home Assistant Google Drive Backup" add-on.
  6. Click on Install, then start the new add-on.
  7. Authenticate with Google Drive to link the add-on with your account.
  8. Open the add-on in the menu on the left, labeled "Snapshot."

Home Assistant Snapshots: If not visible, return to Supervisor, click on "Home Assistant Google Drive Backup," and open the web UI link.

Restore Home Assistant

  1. Open the add-on through the left side menu or the web UI.
  2. Access settings in the upper right corner.
  3. Configure the add-on to upload all snapshots to Google Drive, ensuring to keep some locally for quick access.
  4. Save the settings.

Actions: Click on "Action" in the upper right corner.

  1. Reconnect Google Drive if needed.
  2. Snapshots will be stored on Google Drive in a folder called "Hass.io Snapshots" – do not delete or rename it.
  3. Click "Snapshot Now" to take the first snapshot, syncing it to Google Drive.

You are now configured for backups.

How to Restore Home Assistant on a New Device: If Home Assistant breaks, follow these steps for recovery.

  1. Install Home Assistant on the new device.
  2. Install Google Drive Backup as described above.
  3. Click on the snapshot.
  4. Choose "Restore," and the process will start, rebooting the device if necessary.

Reverting Home Assistant

If you need to revert Home Assistant to an earlier state with access, follow these steps.

  1. Open the add-on through the left side menu or the web UI.
  2. Click on the desired snapshot.
  3. Select "Restore."
